This project is a collaboration with architect Steve Durden. The original home was designed by architect Robert Anderson. Steve had recently completed a renovation and poolhouse addition for the previous owner’s of this home when the couple was made an offer they couldn’t refuse. The house’s new owners then asked Steve to do yet another addition to give them the needed space for a growing family. We were tasked with providing an outdoor living space in an area framed by a steep, rocky outcrop on one side and the house on the other. This space needed to accommodate day-to-day outdoor living for this young family, while also being flexible enough to handle larger gatherings. The resulting courtyard allows for pickup games of Bocce (a familial tradition on the wife’s side) on an oyster shell surface and contains a shallow fountain that can be customized to provide a serene, mirror look, but also has 3 jets that can be independently activated and infinitely adjusted for the desired visual and audible effects. The whole space happens on one plane, so that it can be easily converted into a tented event space.
